Washington, D.C. — Today, Senate Republicans passed a monstrous bill that raises taxes on 87 million middle-class Americans and gives massive tax cuts to millionaires, billionaires, and wealthy corporations. As the Senate debated the bill, Not One Penny and partners protested outside the U.S. Capitol Building for TK hours, rallying in the rain and through the night to show that Republicans will be held accountable for voting on a plan that will do massive harm to our nation’s economy and to our families.

Joined by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senators Cory Booker, Chris Murphy, Bernie Sanders, and Ron Wyden, and many other representatives, the event was coordinated in partnership with Tax March, Americans for Tax Fairness, the Center for American Progress Action Fund, Health Care Voter, Little Lobbyists, Patriotic Millionaires, Public Citizen, and more than two dozen other progressive organizations.

The coalition will build upon the more than 515 events that have been held over the past two months around the country – including over 250 events this week alone – to protest the Republican tax bill, as well as the more than 650,000 calls to members from throughout the country.

“What we know from the last months of work on taxes is that our activists are willing to fight, and fight until this bill is gone and buried,” said Nicole Gill, Executive Director of Tax March. “We know that American families don’t want this bill — the more they hear about it, the more they don’t like it. We vow to fight on until this bill goes exactly where it belongs: in the garbage can.”

“The tax bill that was just passed in the Senate impacts every American,” said Elena Hung, President and Co-Founder of the Little Lobbyists. “That is why in the past XX hours, we have gone back and forth from the People’s Filibuster, to meetings with Senators to tell the story of our children with complex medical needs, who would end up paying the price for their vote. This disastrous tax plan is not just about the numbers; there are faces behind them and we won’t stop fighting for them. We will remember this vote in 2018.”

“The people’s filibuster has shown the intense grassroots energy that has mobilized against the horrible disastrous tax bill that was pushed through the Senate today without any Senators seeing the final bill, let alone regular order,” said Emily Tisch Sussman, Campaign Director at the Center for American Progress Action Fund. “A huge coalition of advocates have come together and they won’t back down. We will hold every Republican accountable for the harm they have done to our country.”
